Milad Rabin talks about Fajr music celebration

In the last days of the year, on the sidelines of the Fajr Music Festival, we sat down with Milad Rabin, a musician, composer and conductor, to discuss how the music trend in Iran and the challenges ahead, and he answered our questions patiently and carefully. In the field of art and music concerns and complaints, he said: “Since I could only go to two concerts about the music festival, I may not be able to talk much about how it goes, but I must say that this year the competitive part of the festival was eliminated, which can have positive aspects.” That is, the festival competitions usually have a lot of words and sayings, and that this festival is only for performing music, especially since this year the focus was on Iranian composers, was a positive point of the festival, but in terms of our activities, we formed an orchestra with Iranian national instruments, or the instruments of the instrument that were sung by Vahid Ansari and played by Ashkan Heydari on violin and drums by Azerbaijani instruments played by Masoud Elahi.

Rabin said about the necessity of holding the Fajr Music Festival, despite many criticisms about the way it is held: “The fact that the festival is also the Fajr Music Festival is very important to me because musically it can be said that it is the biggest art event that is held every year.” Being a festival can have many advantages. It is an experience for our new musicians and composers as well as a bridge for our musicologists to connect with foreign musicians and bands and get acquainted with their music and techniques.

He added: “If the policies of holding the music festival proceed in this way, that is, there are both veterans and young people in the festival, now it needs a very precise and regular management.” The groups that are invited should be of high quality. And the groups that are selected here have to be very careful. That is, both giving the field to the youth and choosing the best of them will make good progress. Now, how much the festival has reached this goal, there is a lot of talk and hadith and many people withdrew in choosing.
Regarding the integration of this festival with the theme of the revolution and the days of the Fajr decade, he said: The festival was held for about 4 years as a festival of revolutionary songs, that is, it was the occasion of February and the victory of the revolution, and after four years its name was changed. It is true that I see a lot of professors who do not like to participate in this festival because of this title, and we saw this issue this year as well. This means that many of our outstanding musicians were not present at the festival. One of the problems of the festival is that artists are not reconciled with such a system and do not like to participate in this event, even though they are great artists.
Milad Rabin said about the different approaches of tastes and their inclusion in the type of music festival: “After 24 years of repetition, the direction of this festival should be determined and a system should be reached and the directors who come should act according to the system. These problems did not occur because there is no specific system. Everyone who is selected as the director of the festival exercises his own taste, and this can be one of the drawbacks of the festival. That is, there should be a set of policies and managers should see how they act accordingly.
