Blocking of independent media of Kashmir

Independent news agency The Kashmir Walla has reported that Essen’s website and social media accounts are now inaccessible in India.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned the censorship of independent media and the ongoing media crackdown in Kashmir: “Once again, censorship of critical voices in Jammu and Kashmir has gone too far. Urges the Government of India to immediately revoke the blocking and censorship orders of Kashmir Vala.”

The Indian Journalists’ Union (IJU) called this action by the local government of Kashmir another blow to independent journalism in Kashmir and said, “This is an attack on press freedom and a clear violation of all the government’s claims to return to normalcy.”

According to the Srinagar-based news agency, access to its website and social media platforms has been restricted within India since August 19 by Indian authorities. Fahad Shah, the media’s former editor, has been in jail since February last year on charges of “seditious” and “anti-India” articles, as well as charges under the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act and the Public Safety Act (PSA).
